BioLaMer’s Biodegradable Super Absorbent Biopolymers Spotlighted by European Innovation Radar

From Concept to Recognition

This recognition underlines the innovation strength, and the potential impact of our work titled “All natural biodegradable superabsorbent biopolymers for food soak-pad technology for extending food shelf-life and for manufacturing hygiene product”. This milestone validates the commitment and vision that has driven our project forward from concept to realization.

Innovation Overview

At the heart of this innovation lies a critical global challenge: reducing plastic pollution and enhancing sustainability in the food packaging industry. Our solution provides a biodegradable, high-performance alternative to synthetic superabsorbent polymers, with broad applicability in food packaging, personal care products and in agriculture where water retention is a requirement.

The superabsorbent biopolymers developed within BioLaMer are sourced from natural, bio-based materials. These materials are fully biodegradable, breaking down into harmless components over time. This offers a sustainable way to reduce the accumulation of non-degradable (micro)plastic waste in landfills and protects the natural environment.

These superabsorbents developed have huge potential applications.

  • Hygiene Products: diapers, sanitary pads, etc.
  • Food Packaging: soak-pad technology that keeps food products fresher for longer.
  • Hydroponics & Agriculture: moisture retaining substrates.

Business Development Programme

As part of the EIC’s Business Acceleration Services, six members of the BioLaMer team took part in a tailored business coaching programme titled “Empowering University Researchers: Design Thinking & Business Model Canvas.” This initiative provided customized training to strengthen entrepreneurial skills and support the transition from research to commercial application. Through the workshop, participants gained hands-on experience with advanced tools, frameworks, and methodologies for transforming scientific innovations into viable business models.

The lead researcher and innovator of this technology Sibu Padmanabhan at AMBER Centre, Trinity College Dublin stated “This recognition by the European Innovation Radar is a major milestone for our team and for sustainable materials research more broadly. Our biodegradable superabsorbent biopolymers represent more than just a scientific breakthrough—they offer a tangible solution to one of the most pressing global challenges: plastic pollution. By creating a high-performance, eco-friendly alternative to synthetic polymers, we’re opening new doors for sustainability in food packaging, hygiene products, and agriculture. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our work move from the lab bench to the radar of real-world impact.”
