BioLaMer project participated in the workshop “Plastics & Environment”, held in Ravenna, Italy, on 5th–6th June 2025, featuring an oral communication and a poster presentation by UNIBO partners Prof Serena Righi and Dr Floriana Coppola. The event gathered experts from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies to discuss the environmental challenges associated with plastics and the pathways toward more sustainable materials and solutions.

Workshop Background
The workshop addressed the dual role of plastics as key drivers of 20th-century progress and major sources of waste and environmental impact. Experts and industry discussed monitoring, the effects of micro- and nanoplastics and additives, regulatory aspects, and the development of low-impact materials.
A strong emphasis was placed on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a key methodology to evaluate and compare the sustainability of both conventional and emerging polymeric materials, supporting informed decision-making across the plastics value chain.

BioLaMer’s innovative contribution through insightful presentation
BioLaMer contributed to the workshop through a poster presentation and an oral presentation delivered by our partner Dr Floriana Coppola on the title “Sustainable plastics: eco-design, low environmental impact solutions, and LCA”.
Her talk focused on the challenges of assessing bio-based materials at low technology readiness levels, where data scarcity and uncertainty are significant. A literature review helped us identify suitable early-stage methods, with preliminary results suggesting that combining several tools can guide material design.

The poster presentation provided an overview of the BioLaMer project, outlining its objectives, scope, and ambitious challenges in addressing sustainability within the context of innovative bio-based materials.
